Pike Fishing in Ireland: A Comprehensive Guide

By Killian, Irish Fishing Hub April 14, 2026

Ireland is famous for having some of the finest Northern Pike (*Esox lucius*) angling in Europe. Thanks to our vast network of limestone lakes, slow-moving rivers, and sprawling canal systems, Irish pike grow rapidly and frequently surpass the magical 20lb (9kg) specimen mark.

If you're looking to target the ultimate freshwater apex predator, this guide will walk you through the top locations, baits, and seasons to ensure you land a true Irish monster.

1. The Best Pike Lakes (Loughs) in Ireland

The River Shannon system is the heartbeat of Irish pike fishing. The lakes along this system act as giant breeding grounds with monumental drop-offs where giant pike ambush their prey.

Lough Derg

Located on the River Shannon, Lough Derg is vast. It holds massive shoals of roach and bream, which in turn support gigantic pike. Trolling large lures like Savage Gear Line Thru Trouts or presenting dead baits on the bottom near the lake's islands can yield massive fish. (Make sure to check the new *Depth Charts* feature in our app to locate sharp drop-offs!).

Lough Ree

Further up the Shannon, Lough Ree features countless bays and inlets. Pike here often hide in the dense reed beds during spring and move to deeper water in the summer. Jerkbaiting over weed beds is highly effective here.

2. Ideal Baits and Lures

Irish pike are not fussy, but presentation is everything. Because catch-and-release is fiercely practiced in Ireland (it is illegal by default to kill a pike over 50cm), these fish can be wily.

Conservation Note: You absolutely MUST use a wire trace. Pike have razor-sharp teeth that will slice through standard monofilament or fluorocarbon instantly, resulting in a lost fish that will likely die with your hooks in its jaw. Carry long-nosed pliers for safe hook removal.

3. Seasonality: When to Fish

While you can catch pike year-round in Ireland, there are distinct peak seasons:

Winter (October to March): This is the primary season for targeting giant females. The weed die-back makes lure fishing easier, and deadbaiting becomes incredibly effective as the fish seek easy, high-calorie meals without expending energy chasing prey.

Spring (April): Post-spawning, pike are ravenous and will attack lures aggressively in shallower waters as they try to regain body weight.
